Every Lower School student learns to make music with their voice and instruments by participating in music classes. In addition, students take part in grade level and school-wide Chapel programs. The curriculum is based upon the pedagogical ideas of Zoltan Kodaly, which uses a literacy-based continuum of choral singing, American folk songs, and singing games to provide meaningful music experiences in the classroom.
Class Four and Five students may expand their choral-performing experience by joining St. John's Singers, an unauditioned choir. Directed by Jeanna Villanueva and Phillip Sammons, this choir can be heard singing in Chapel, Choral Concerts, Candlelight Service, and numerous community events.
Students in all choral groups perform several times throughout the year, culminating in the annual Lower School Spring Show. Check our
arts calendar for upcoming performance dates—the sound of these children's voices shouldn't be missed!
