In Middle School choral music, students learn to use and express themselves with their voices. Vocal technique, in-tune singing and choral singing (unison and 2-part), are skills that are explored. In addition, students can further explore vocal music opportunities by joining Cantatores, Boy Choir, the Class 8 Show Choir, or the annual Middle School musical.
Cantatores is a choral ensemble open to all Middle School girls. Performance opportunities are offered through Chapel services, school-sponsored concerts throughout the year, and other community events. Though the group is a performing ensemble, the students are taught music literacy skills, vocal techniques, sight-reading, and understanding of style through the process of preparing choral literature.Cantatores meets from August-February, culminating in the Middle School Pop Show.
The
Class 8 Show Choir meets from March –May and is open to Class 8 girls only. The choir stages and performs popular music.
The
Boy Choir is a non-auditioned choir made up of boys in the 6th through 9th grades (the only cross-divisional ensemble in the school!). They rehearse two times per rotation in the morning ensemble period (7:30-8:15 a.m.) and perform in four major concerts during the year: The Fall & Spring Choral Concerts, Candlelight, the MS Pop Show, as well as various LS, MS, and US Chapel services.
The Boy Choir performs a diverse array of literature, from Classical to Pop/Rock to World/Ethnic Music. They combine with Cantatores (the MS girls' choir) to dance and sing in the Pop Show, and perform with the SJS orchestra at the annual Candlelight Service.
