We are excited to continue our Community and Inclusion initiative in Lower School, Building Bridges with Books, with our third and final selection for this school year. This program fosters a sense of unity and understanding among our students by exploring diverse perspectives through literature. Every Lower School faculty member will receive a copy of the featured Bridge Book for their classroom, creating a shared reading experience within our community.
Our April Bridge Book is We Are Definitely Human by X. Fang, a hilarious alien invasion story with a feel-good message about what it means to be human. Here are some talking points you might use to engage your child with We Are Definitely Human:
What do the Lis learn about acceptance and kindness from their visitors?
Have you ever felt alone or "alien"? How did you handle it?
How can you make others feel welcome?
We hope this book sparks meaningful conversations in our Lower School community!
Our April after-school service event will be on Wednesday, April 16th for interested students in Kindergarten, Class One, and Class Five. We will meet in the LS Cafeteria from 3:15-4:00 to decorate and assemble "Sunflower Sacks" for Nora’s Home, which serves patients awaiting or recovering from organ transplants.
Guests at Nora's Home often spend long days at clinic and miss meals. Sunflower Sacks help provide an easy snack for guests to bring with them to long clinic appointments.
Interested students should sign up in the Lower School office so that we have enough supplies.
Please save the date for Class One's annual Parents Day Chapel on April 28th. The service will begin at 8:25 in St. John the Divine Church and will be led by Class One students. Reserved seating will be in the front of the sanctuary for all Class One parents. Due to First Steps preschool dropoff, please plan to park in Taub and walk over to the church with your raptor badge on. A reception will be held in each Class 1 classroom immediately following the service and should wrap up by 10:30. More information will come from your child's advisor closer to the event.
Note: All Class One students must be in performance attire on this day.
Important dates for Class One will be listed here for you to mark your calendar. We kindly request that the events marked with an asterisk * are only attended by those parents who have signed up.

5/16/25: Mav-a-Palooza & Chapel Chum Celebration

All students and families are invited to join us for Lower School Night at the Varsity Softball game on Friday, April 4th. Meet under Big Red anytime between 3:15 and 4:15 to make spirit posters and have a popsicle, then we’ll all walk over to the new softball fields around 4:30. Pre-game events will begin at 4:45, and the game will start at 5:00.
Our next Maverick Madness Spirit Day will be on Friday, April 4th. Students may wear as much red, black, and SJS gear as possible, or they may wear their normal uniform. Please see page 31 of the Lower School Handbook for specific guidelines for out-of-uniform dress.
During the month of April, our Sharing Circle topics will revolve around communication and creation with self and others. We will discuss being a friend, being mindful, finding mindful coping strategies, and empathy.
